Senior Techie Vol. 1:3 Feb. 12, 2020

The Agony and the Ecstasy: Learning Something New

Time for installment 3 of my quest to conquer the tech world that is in everything that we do. This new year, 2020 promises to have plenty of tech for us to conquer, well, at least learn that it exists.
How many of you have seen the newest iPads? Let me tell you, if you are in the market for a tablet (yes, tablet. I’ll explain later) then look no further than Apple. Let me be clear, although I wish Apple was giving me equipment and/or other tangible compensation, they are not. So, I am in no way affiliated with Apple or any of its subsidiaries, to my knowledge. My wallet determines my ability to purchase Apple products. No kickbacks for saying good things.

Okay, back to tablet vs iPad. A friend of mine put me onto this bit of common misinformation. Thanks. The question was using his iPad. Ok, let’s do a script:

At Rise:

SENIOR TECHIE talking with a FRIEND about technology.

Friend: I have an iPad but I’m not using it.

Senior Techie: Why not? We could be doing Face Time.

Friend: Well, my iPad is too old and I don’t have a number for it.

Senior Techie: What do you mean by a number and that its too old? What model is it?

Friend: I don’t have a cell plan for it and its an off brand.

Senior Techie intrigued by this exchange. She presses on.

Senior Techie: What do you mean by “off brand”? Isn’t it an Apple product?

Friend: Well, no its another kind of iPad.

Senior Techie: (screeching to a halt in thought) Then its not an iPad if it is not made by Apple.

Friend: What?

Senior Techie: (loving to explain) Its like this. You know how we ask for a Kleenex and the box says Puffs? Well, both are actually facial tissues but we call them Kleenex. We’re not supposed to call them that but we do because, well, we have adopted a trademark name to describe all facial tissues. Kleenex is a trademark name like Puffs but to the average person, name or no name brand, we say “hand me a

Kleenex”. We don’t care what the box says. This is the same with iPad versus tablet. Many of us call any tablet an iPad. But, Samsung makes a tablet, Microsoft makes a tablet but only Apple makes an iPad. Lesson over…(beat) Are you still there?

Friend: Yes, I was listening. So, my ah… but, I still don’t have a cell plan for it.

Senior Techie: You don’t need a cell plan. Do you have WiFi?

Friend: Yes.

Senior Techie: Well, we can use Skype. As long as both parties have it downloaded and I am on your Skype contact list. We’ll talk about that later. So, pull that tablet out of storage, charge it up and let’s chat later about how to do it.

Friend: Sounds good to me.

Senior Techie and Friend end their conversation.

Senior Techie: Oh, boy, now I have to be ready to be seen on a video call. I’m sitting here now in my pajamas with real bed head. (Senior Techie sighs.)

  1. One of the first things I learned when I got a new iPad last year (not the too model, by any stretch), was that I was able to chat with friends around the globe with wi-fi and FaceTime. The hardest part is scheduling a time to chat with someone in the Eastern Hemisphere.

And as the Senior Techie knows all to well, I am pretty much a non-techie!
